Artist's Description
Even from the outside of the haunted walls of the Eastern State Penitentiary in downtown Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, one will feel the weight of history immediately. This tower is a remnant of the past and stands to remind us of the history of prisons here in the United States and throughout the world. It is a fascinating place to visit. This picture was taken just outside the main entrance. This tower leads into the main courtyard. While admiring its picturesque beauty today, I couldn't help but wonder how many guards passed through these doors. Did prisoners enter through the front gates? What were they thinking at the time and what was life like for those who worked and lived within these walls?

I was born and raised in the suburbs of Los Angeles, California, but I'm a country girl at heart. I am happiest when hiking in the mountains or wandering through green open fields. Photography has always been a part of my life, mostly as a tool to help me remember the people and places I encountered in my travels throughout Peru, Mexico and Europe. As a high school Spanish teacher, I used my photogrpahs from my travels to show students the life and culture in other parts of the world. As a mom, I always had my camera with me to freeze time and help me hold on to those fleeting moments.
